Business and Careers
When I was growing up I was told, “My son go to school, get good grades and do us proud. Don’t forget we are banking on you to be the first family member at university. After university find a job get married and live happily ever after!” If this is said by your mother it could be so powerful that it drives you to your destination at rocket speed. But wait, this could be just another Tsunami in the making, not only for the dear son with 15 points from Kutama but also for the innocent wife and kids.
Several times men let their parents; especially their mothers determine their destiny in life. Not only was my father a disappointed man when he learnt that his son with 14 points was not going to be a doctor because he had done Computing in place of Chemistry. His son was going to do Electronics, something to do with repairing radios and televisions he used to say. To this day he is disappointed.
If this happened to you a long time ago and you ended up a medical doctor when you would have preferred to be an artist, if you then did not learn to love your work you could be one miserable guy today. But I have news for you; it’s never too late to start directing your efforts towards your interests today. You don't have to be venting your frustrations of having a boring, low paying job on some innocent wife. Actuaries are paid handsomely, and this has led many A Level students to take a suicidal four subjects to earn that rare place at NUST. After getting a paltry 10 points on four subjects, such people have high suicidal tendencies and will always be convinced that the examination board was not fair on them. At least they are lucky they did not make it and then undertake a lengthy degree program, only for them to find the job market taking a twist and the promise of big bucks is exchanged for a lengthy job search such that at the end you take whatever comes your way.
Putting what you enjoy ahead of financial returns and third party opinions can make a difference in your life. You are at least assured that you will be doing what you enjoy even if it means low financial returns and you are less susceptible to stress and boredom related diseases such as impotence. I for one would prefer to be a DIY house hubby, self employed in computing and technology related areas and doing my best to ensure the success of my family and nation. I have never aspired beyond being a multi-talented billionaire who spends most of his time playing with technological gadgets especially the computer. I have taken myself to task to ensure that I a hubby and a half to my wife, a father and role model to my kids at whatever cost.
Did you see when it’s necessary for you to change your career? If not then its either you are in the right field or you are not aware of what you want and would therefore take anything that comes your way. Live happily ever after!
